Artist's Statement
"My paintings explore the relationship between man and the landscape in two ways. The works which are composed of man-made elements combined with painted elements address the ways that man extracts material from the land and turns it to his own devices, relegating the landscape itself to a memory. The paintings that are straight depictions of the landscape are an attempt to document the beauty of the land in the absence of man's impact."
Douglas Whittle received a BFA in painting and an MFA in printmaking from the University of Florida. In between the two degrees he spent two years as a freshwater aquacultural extension agent in Zaire, Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer. Since 1992 he has taught printmaking, painting and drawing at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina while exhibiting his work in shows across the United States.
The majority of the works shown are in the possession of the artist, but some may also be seen at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery in Asheville, NC and at Abby's Grill in Spartanburg, SC.
